5S
If you are a manager, a supervisor or have responsibility for a workplace, one of the quick wins you can achieve is to care for a quality working environment.
A method you can use to obtain this quality working environment is 5S.
5S focuses on organizing the workplace, keeping it clean and orderly, and maintaining the standardized conditions and discipline needed to do a good job.
The method is developed in Japan (5S stands for 5 Japanese words that start with the letter S.
- Seiri (sort): Sort out what is needed and what is not needed. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Seiton (straighten): Arrange essential things in order for easy access.
- Seiso (scrub): Keep machines and work areas clean.
- Seiketsu (standardize): Make cleaning and checking a routine practice.
- Shitsuke (sustain): Make the 5S's a way of life. Requires discipline.
A quality working environment motivates people, both on the shopfloor as well as others.
5S improves safety, work efficiency, productivity and establishes a sense of ownership.
5S is best implemented very gradually over a period of time.
